School of Management’s £12m new building wins sustainability award

Bradford University School of Management’s innovative new Emm Lane building has been recognised for its sustainability credentials in the RICS Pro Yorkshire Awards.
The winners of the Pro Yorkshire Awards – known as the region’s property ‘oscars’ – were announced at a dinner on 20 May 2011 at The Pavilion, Elland Road, Leeds. The School of Management beat off competition from the University of Leeds’ ‘Edge’ building, Bramall Learning Centre at the RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate, the Temple Avenue Project in York and four others, in the Sustainability category.
The building, opened in July 2010 by Sir Ken Morrison, includes a Harvard-style MBA suite, new social and learning spaces, a restaurant and floating staircase. It unites the School of Management’s campus, formerly split into two parts, through a new two-story Atrium. The design brings together the existing Victorian buildings with modern, cutting-edge design. Architects Farrell & Clark overcame the challenges of the School’s 14 acres of conservation woodland and listed buildings to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ environmental rating. Environmental features include a biomass boiler, energy efficient lighting, solar panels, and electric car charging facilities. Project management was carried out by Batley-based PSK Prout Tilbrook and construction by Quarmby Construction Company, based in Ilkley.
The building is part of Bradford University’s “Ecoversity” initiative to minimise the university’s impact on the environment. Bradford is currently 7th in the “Green League” which measures the environmental impact of universities.
Dr Sarah Dixon, Dean of Bradford University School of Management, said: “This new building was all about improving the experience of our students, staff and the businesses we work with whilst creating a culture of sustainability. It has been outstanding in both respects and our first class facilities reflect our credentials as one of Europe’s leading Business Schools and number one in the North of England.”
