This enewsletter is unashamedly (nearly) all about social media.
In the last three months we have seen a tipping point
– The sceptics are admitting defeat and getting started
– Those who had tried out LinkedIn or Twitter now want to win business from them
– There is a lot of interest in thought leadership blogs to bring personality to a business and
improve Google rankings
Rob Wilmot, one of the founders of Freeserve and early adopter of social media, spoke at the Buy Yorkshire event organised by the Yorkshire Mafia in April. He reckons he saw the tipping point start 18 months ago, when the B2B market started taking social media seriously.
Northern Lights ran a free workshop for the Harrogate Chamber of Trade & Commerce at the Yorkshire Business Market, also in April. Out of the 15 topics on offer, by far the most popular topics were ours – Create a blog to improve Google rankings, your reputation – and win new customers and one on LinkedIn. There were more than 100 booked on each of these.
The BBC is aiming to increase the number of women commenting in the media. Victoria Tomlinson was one of 30 women selected for free training out of more than 200 from the North. And her area of expertise? Social media, business and education. She has already appeared on BBC Breakfast TV and Woman’s Hour. Read her blogs with tips from the training and experience

The University of York has won the contract to deliver the York and North Yorkshire business training for the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce. As their associate, we will be delivering a number of these courses and helping to identify topics that businesses need – let us know if there is something you are looking for.
And our June masterclass is a sell-out so there is now an additional course on 10 and 24 July (two-days tailored to your business over two weeks – we help you to write a strategy and plan, you practise and come back for a final super-masterclass!)
Over the last three years we have been researching and writing ebooks to help people understand different aspects of social media and apply it to their businesses. These are now all available on our website – all free, except the one to help students get a job. And that is just 99p!
Welcome to Shelley who joins our team this month. We have worked with Shelley for a while as an associate – she trained as a journalist with Thomson Regional newspapers and has been a press and publicity officer for a number of organisations and charities, most recently for a medical research charity. She has particular copywriting and blogging skills.
Good luck – we’d love to help you get going or improve. Don’t get left behind!
